Meet Past Graduates

On September 24, 2020, the Criminal Justice Commission appointed Sharmese L. Walcott as State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Hartford.

​

State’s Attorney Walcott is the chief law enforcement officer in the Judicial District of Hartford, which includes the capital city and 18 surrounding communities. The State’s Attorney oversees employees at the Judicial District courthouse in Hartford, Geographical Area courts in Enfield, Hartford and Manchester and the Juvenile Court and Community Court in Hartford.

State’s Attorney Walcott joined the Division of Criminal Justice in 2007 in the Danbury Judicial District after working in private practice at her own law firm from 2004-2007. She moved to the Hartford Judicial District in 2018 where she served until her appointment as Executive Assistant State’s Attorney in 2020.

​

State’s Attorney Walcott graduated from J.F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, and a Juris Doctor Degree from the George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C. 

LaToya M. Smith_founder and CEO Brass Ci

LaToya M. Smith is an award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of Brass City Media, Inc.

 

Smith was awarded Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards from the U.S. Small

Business Administration and the New York Small Business Development Center in 2019.

Brass City Media, Inc. is a visual storytelling media agency and M/WBE certified firm founded in 2014 that specializes in video production and brand consulting for organizations and SMB’s. BCM’s expertise in authentic storytelling through video helps their clients improve brand awareness, increase engagement and build trust with their audience.

 

Smith is a keynote speaker, expert facilitator and moderator that has been invited to speak at Google, the Inc. 5000 Conference, BLACK ENTERPRISE, the New York Small Business Development Center, Eastern Connecticut State University and the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

 

Smith is a native of Waterbury, CT and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Stefanie Brodie, PhD leads and conducts research to make transportation safer and more equitable.  She specializes in solving problems in transportation planning and policy. She currently works at the consulting firm, Toole Design Group and previously worked for the District of Columbia Department of Transportation.

 

After graduating from Wilby High School, in Waterbury, CT, she attended the University of Maryland and completed her BS in Civil Engineering. While at Maryland, she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. After a few years in consulting, she continued her education at the Georgia Institute of Technology where she earned her Master's of City and Regional Planning and both her MS and PhD in Civil Engineering.

 

She is a Marie Curie Fellow alumna and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. She is currently the Research Practice Lead for Toole Design and believes that research should be used to help decision makers in public service make more informed decisions.

Courtney Lynn Chapman was born in Waterbury to Troy and Linda Chapman. She was educated in the Waterbury public school system and participated in many after school activities including Granville Academy and theater.

 

Courtney went on to receive her BSN in Nursing at Quinnipiac University in Hamden Connecticut. There she served as the Vice President of the Black Student Union for two years. Upon graduation she immediately started her nursing career at Yale New Haven Health in the Neuroscience ICU. Most recently she has decided to expand her career and has taken a new position in Interventional Radiology after spending twelve years in the Neuro ICU. While at Yale, Courtney has advanced the clinical ladder to a Clinical Nurse III, participated on committees in her unit and has precepted many new nurses to the Neuro ICU.

 

She plans on pursuing an advance degree but currently is undecided on which direction to take. In her spare time Courtney loves arts & crafts, crime/mystery TV shows and spoiling her dog Chunk. Despite her future path being unknown, Courtney is guided by the Bible verse “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" Hebrew 11:1.
